Crunch time for New Jersey lab

Article Abstract:

Alcatel's euro 10-billion take-over of a French telecoms company Lucent would create the world's biggest maker of telecommunication company, however it could also create even more pressure to cut back basic research at New Jersey based Bell Labs. Despite company statements that 10% of the combined 88,000 workforces are likely to lose their job, some observers claim that the merger can strengthen Bell labs in the long run.

Toshiba goes nuclear

Article Abstract:

Japanese giants, Toshiba acquired Westinghouse Electric, largest supplier of nuclear power stations, for about US$5.4 billion. The high price surprised the markets and Toshiba's shares dipped by about 3% on news of acquisition while some analysts question whether the Japanese electronic giant needs the hassle of controlling the world's largest supplier of nuclear power stations.

Assault on batteries

Article Abstract:

Miniature fuel cells are developed as an alternative way to power portable devices, which are not yet ready. According to the advocates, small fuel cells would provide three to ten times as much power as even the best battery allowing people to run their laptops all day without recharging, or to watch entire movie on mobile phones.
