Dancing on the edge

Article Abstract:

Milnesand, New Mexico is the prairie-chicken capital of the state where each morning for a month or beginning in March, the dancing of the prairie chickens is the premier vernal spectacle of the American prairie. For a couple of hours the Tympanuchus pallidicinctus, all males, gobble and strut and challenge each other to mock battles in the sandy arena for those few vital moments when a hen prairie chicken finally comes along.

Danger in numbers

Article Abstract:

The Priblilof spectacle that arises every summer as seals and birds converge from scattered winter wanderings in the Bering Sea, Alaska and beyond is described. The spectacle is conceived in the cold, rich current running north from the depths of the Aleutian Basin to the eastern shelf of the Bering Sea.

The long rangers

Article Abstract:

The need for free-roaming wolves, grizzlies and elk in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is described. The problem of wolves killing cattle in the local vicinity is discussed.
