Denning by black bears in northcentral Florida

Article Abstract:

The length of winter denning for pregnant black bears (Ursus americanus) in Florida is similar to that in other areas of the southeastern United States. Successful reproduction requires pregnant black bears to hibernate for a minimum of 3-4 months. Barren females and males in Florida denned for periods shorter than that from other areas because food is available in Florida throughout the year. Black bears in Florida have adapted by decreasing the length of denning relative to that required for survival in northern areas where food is not available during winter.

Die-off decimates Florida manatee

Article Abstract:

Since Jan. 1, 1996, 10% of the Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus, population in the United States has been found dead. The three possible causes may be the presence of a biological toxins produced by dinoflagellates that cause a red tide, or a viral or bacterial disease, or a contaminant. However, blood and tissue analysis have been inconclusive. Researchers are hopeful of the end of the deaths as no fresh carcasses of manatees were found between Apr. 25 and May 10, 1996.

Quantitative support for a subjective fatness index for immobilized polar bears

Article Abstract:

A study was carried out to ascertain the ecological effect of fatness index, essential for survival in polar bears. Results showed that continued use of the method might provide important information on the effect of environmental change on polar bear populations.
