Diel variation in blue whale calls recorded in the eastern tropical Pacific

Article Abstract:

A null hypothesis is tested that blue whale calling behavior does not show significant diel variation in order to determine whether variability in calling could provide an indication as to the behavioral function of B calls. These diel patterns in call production correlate well with established diel patterns in prey distribution, with the highest calling rates occurring when prey is reported to be closet to the surface.

Vocal labelling of family members in spectacled parrotlets, Forpus conspicillatus

Article Abstract:

The use of different acoustic signals by spectacled parrotlets for different family members is tested. The birds responded more often to calls uttered in their presence than to calls uttered in the presence of another family member and use contact calls to refer to a social companion, thereby labelling or naming their conspecifics.

Diel flight periodicity and the evolution of auditory defences in the Macrolepidoptera

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the investigation of 7 ultrasound-eared and 12 ultrasound-earless families of Nearctic Lepidoptera to determine their auditory defences and evolution of the diel flight periodicities.
