Different phenotypes for mice deficient in either activins or activin receptor type II

Article Abstract:

A null mutation in the Act RcII gene in mice is generated utilizing embryonic stem cell technology to study the function of the ActRcII in mammalian reproduction and development. The mice with ActRcII deficiency exhibited facial and skeletal abnormalities identical to the Pierre-Robin syndrome in humans. But the abnormalities did not affect the growth and development of these mice. This indicates that during ActRcII absence other hormones control the growth and development.

Multiple defects and perinatal death in mice deficient in follistatin

Article Abstract:

The function of follistatin in mammals is investigated by using the loss-of-function mutant mice. The absence of follistatin in mice reveals a retardation in growth and a reduction in the diaphragm and intercostal muscle mass. The shiny taut skin, skeletal defects in the ribs and abnormal tooth development are other observed features. These indicate that follistatin has more influence on the growth and regulation of a mammal than activin.

Alpha-inhibin is a tumour-suppressor gene with gonadal specificity in mice

Article Abstract:

Alpha-inhibin, the gene for one of a group of dimeric growth factors, has been identified as a tumor-suppressor gene. The development of gonadal tumors in mice that were bred to lack the alpha-inhibin gene confirmed the gene's role in preventing the uncontrolled growth of cells during the embryonic phase. The alpha-inhibin-deficient mice were produced using homologous recombination in embryonic stem cells.
