Dispatches from patched
Article Abstract:
The human patched (ptc) gene is a developmental gene as well as a cancer suppressor which patterns the embryonic development. The gene which encodes a 12-transmembrane-domain protein has an important role in the inhibitory process of the Hedgehog signaling pathway. Ptc represses the transcription of target genes, which the introduction of the secreted protein Hedgehog can undo. Nevoid basal-cell carcinoma syndrome is characterized by the inactivation of ptc allele.

Article Abstract:
Developmental signals are potent regulators of cell behavior and thus can have disastrous effects if uncontrolled. For the discovery of the normal function for a protein that is implicated in cancer, it is important to remember that the relationship between the developmental and tumor-causing functions of signaling proteins can be quite direct.

Inhibition of Drosophila EGF receptor activation by the secreted protein Argos
Article Abstract:
The Argos protein inhibits epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor function. Various possible mechanisms of regulation of EGF receptor signalling by Argos were studied with the Drosophila homolog of the mammalian EGF receptor (DER). Argos was found to function as an extracellular inhibitor of DER activation by the Spitz protein.
