Do breeding phase and detection distance influence the effective area surveyed for northern goshawks?

Article Abstract:

An experiment was carried out to improve existing survey methodology by evaluating the probability of detecting goshawks at active nests in northern Minnesota in three breeding phases and four broadcast calls at only one distance per trial. Results suggested that calculations of effective area surveyed could be applied to other areas where the probability of detection is a known function of distance.

Are dawn vocalization surveys effective for monitoring goshawks nest-area occupancy?

Article Abstract:

Research on Utah goshawk populations indicates that dawn vocalization surveys are an effective tool for determining nest areas during periods of courtship and pre-incubation, with an overall accuracy rate of 90%. The technique, however, requires more effort in remote mountain forest settings.
