Does sexual selection account for the conspicuous head dimorphism in the Midas cichlid?

Article Abstract:

The role of dimorphic nuchal hump in the Nicaraguan cichlid fish 'Cichlasoma' citrinellum which suggested inter- and intra- sexual selection was analyzed. Male and female cichlid fish differed in their responses to humps of different sizes. Females responded most to medium or normal humps while, most males responded to smallest humps. Humps helps females to recognize males and vice-versa. It was concluded, that sex recognition involves more than visual stimulus presented by the hump.

Effects of avian mobbing on roost use and diet of powerful owls, Ninox strenua

Article Abstract:

Mobbing is a prey behavior wherein prey conspecifics gather around a predator and exhibit vocal and visual displays as an anti-predatory defense behavior. The effect of bird mobbing on the choice of roost and prey selection among the powerful owls Ninox strenua was investigated. Results indicate that these owls roost more often in rainforests which are relatively inaccessible to mobber avian species. Further, owls prey on non-mobbers more often than they do on mobbing species.
