Duelling aphids: intraspecific fighting in Astegopteryx minuta (Homoptera: Hormaphididae)
Article Abstract:
Horned aphids, Astegopteryx minuta compete with each other to seek feeding access to economically defensible plant tissue. Aphids acquire feeding sites by replacing another aphid by fighting, using a site previously left or resorting to new sites. Adult aphids exhibit high rates of fighting compared to first and third instars. Existence of other aphids modifies the searching behavior of duelling aphids. Aphids analyze the size and fighting capacity of the defender through antennating its dorsal surface.

Soldiers effectively defend aphid colonies against predators in the field
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of soldiers of the gall-forming aphid, Pemphigus spyrothecae Pass, in protecting their galls against predation. Results suggested that the basic survival rates of soldiers and non-soldiers are not significantly different. They also indicated that the soldiers were effective in defending aphid galls from various predator attacks.

Behavior, morphology and the division of labour in two soldier-producing aphids
Article Abstract:
The behavior and morphology of social aphids that produce dimorphic first-instar larvae of soldiers and nonsoldiers, with regard to division of labour, were examined.
