Ecology of transgenic oilseed rape in natural habitats

Article Abstract:

Oilseed rape genetically engineered for herbicide tolerance displays no greater invasiveness than conventional rape, and less in some circumstances. An experimental protocol for testing plant invasiveness was devised and used under a variety of conditions. The conclusions may alleviate some concerns about genetically engineered crops. Plants designed to better survive natural risks, such as drought, might prove more invasive.

Bollworms, genes and ecologists

Article Abstract:

Liu and colleagues have described research that shows that an insect pests' developmental timing alters when it is fed on a genetically modified (GM) crop. The pest, the pink bollworm (pectinophora gossypiella), was fed on genetically engineered cotton incorporating genes encoding insect toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). This and other recent findings will further add to the debate about GM crops.

Transgenic crops in natural habitats

Article Abstract:

Issues are presented concerning the survival rates of transgenic maize, beet, potato and rape planted in natural habitats over a 10-year period. The plants did not show invasive tendencies and were not very successful in surviving in natural conditions.
