Effects of dietary level of lysine and of level and source of protein on feed intake, growth performance, and plasma amino acid pattern in the finishing pig
Article Abstract:
Sixty female and 60 castrated male pigs were given diets with known crude protein (CP) levels supplemented with 0.55% or 0.65% of lysine to evaluate the relationship between lysine, amino acid balance, dietary protein, feed intake and growth performance. Increasing lysine in the diet enhances muscle gain, but increasing CP amounts while maintaining the lysine level had no effect on food intake. However,it did increase the feed conversion ratio. On the other hand, the addition of nonessential amino acids decreased feed intake but did not affect the feed conversion ratio. Excess protein in the diet lowered growth rates partly due to the additional energy requirement of amino acid catabolism.

Hypothalamic neurotransmitter concentrations and meat quality in stressed pigs offered excess dietary tryptophan and tyrosine
Article Abstract:
Pigs fed supplemental dietary tryptophan (TRP) and tyrosine (TYR) had increases in certain hypothalamic neurotransmitter levels that regulate the stress response. Although carcass traits were almost similar, stressed pigs given TRP and TYR supplements had less occurrence of severe pale, soft exudative (PSE) ham compared to those fed control diets. The occurrence of slight PSE ham were 38, 54, and 46% for stressed pigs on TRP, TYR and control diets, respectively. Thus, TYR and TRP, which are involved in the stress response, may reduce the severity of PSE pork.
