Effects of introduced mosquitofish and bullfrogs on the threatened California red-legged frog

Article Abstract:

Effects of bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) and mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) tadpoles on red-legged frog (Rana aurora draytonii) tadpoles in spatially complex, speciose communities in California have been tested and found to have been a factor in the decline of the threatened species. Impact of bullfrogs may be greater. The red-legged frogs are now found in the coastal foothills almost entirely, having once bred all over the lower central valley and low elevations of the Sierra. Mosquitofish and bullfrogs were introduced into the habitat of the threatened California red-legged frog as biological control agents for mosquito larvae have been suspected of having contributed to decline of the red-legged frog, and other exotic species have frequently caused declines of native fauna, sometimes of amphibians.

Mechanisms of reduced Trillium recruitment along edges of old-growth forest fragments

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the decreasing populations of Trillium ovatum found in fragmented habitats in North American conifer forests. Topics discussed include levels of plant reproduction and regeneration at the edge of fragmented landscapes, as well as the effects of decreased seed production and increased seed predation on the plant populations.
