Effects of mass extinctions on biodiversity

Article Abstract:

Mass extinction that occurs after long periods increases biodiversity. A simple model, in which long periods of growth according to a logistic equation are interrupted by short periods of mass extinction, predicts the diversification pattern. A logistic differential equation is derived from the extinction that occurred at the end of the Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous periods. The logistic equations of the fauna are coupled with others.

An oblique slant on deep-sea biodiversity

Article Abstract:

Links exist between diversity in the deep-sea benthos and geological time, surface production, patterns of glaciation and planetary behavior. There seems to be a relationship between nutrient input and patterns of deep-sea biodiversity. A multidisciplinary approach that includes palaeotology, palaeoclimatology and contemporary ecology may be required to form a historical, global-scale comprehension of deep-sea biodiversity.

Timing of the Ethiopian flood basalt event and implications for plume birth and global change

Article Abstract:

Continental flood basalts are often seen as evidence of the impingement of mantle plume heads on the lithosphere. The Ethiopian traps, one of the last remaining flood basalts, were studied, and geocrhonological and magentostratiagrphic results are reported. The majority of the traps erupted around 30 Myr ago, over a 7 Myr or less period, during changes to a colder and drier global climate.
