Effects of selection cutting and landscape-scale harvesting on the reproductive success of two Neotropical migrant bird species

Article Abstract:

The effects of forest harvesting at two spatial scales on the productivity of two Neotropical migrant bird species, the Black-throated Blue Warbler and the Ovenbird are evaluated by selecting study plots located either in selection-cut stands or in stands that were lightly harvested 30 years ago. Results of the study reveal that the effects of selection cutting on demography are species-specific and that Ovenbird persistence in selection cuts may be compromised unless the intensity or frequency of cutting is decreased.

Downstream Effects of Erosion from Small-Scale Gold Mining on the Instream Habitat and Fish Community of a Small Neotropical Rainforest Stream

Article Abstract:

Gold mining impacts on stream ecology include high turbidity, suspended sediment, and concentrations of iron, aluminum, and potassium. Impacts on fish populations include low numbers of young fishes, low species diversity, and low relative food-fish biomass. Implications regarding ongoing siltation from gold mining are discussed.

Fragmentation effects on forest birds: Relative influence of woodland cover and configuration on landscape occupancy

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the influence of landscape structure and woodland cover on bird species presence and distribution in Canada. Results discussed include the importance of landscape configuration in predicting species presence, as well as the species-specific responses to landscape change.
