Effects of summer sheep grazing on browse nutritive quality in autumn and winter

Article Abstract:

The effects of summer sheep grazing on the nutritive quality of browse for wild ungulates were investigated. Six shrub species commonly browsed by white-tailed deer, Rocky Mountain elk, and moose on transitory range in northern Idaho were considered. Results showed that early-summer grazing improved both autumn and winter browse quality in redstem ceanothus, rose, ninebark and snowberry as well as browse quality of thimbleberry in autumn. On the other hand, late-summer sheep grazing reduced autumn browse quality in rose and snowberry while improving browse quality of rose in winter.
