Another taboo bites the dust

Article Abstract:

Recent surveys of sexual practices in France and Britain may provide valuable information about the transmission of AIDS. The surveys' completion suggests that the widespread distaste for intimate research, exemplified by the opposition of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, is yielding to the urgent need to find out how AIDS passes from one person to another. Such knowledge is essential to understanding how sexual habits can be modified to control the epidemic. Permissiveness and disdain for prophylactics among 35 to 45 year olds in both countries were the most alarming findings.

Sexual lifestyles and HIV risk

Article Abstract:

A new survey of sexual practices in Britain may improve understanding of how human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are spread, which in turn will help refine efforts to control HIV. The survey, which was carried out from May 1990 to Dec 1991, consisted of face-to-face interviews with 18,876 men and women between 16 and 59 years old. Respondents also filled out questionnaires about sexual habits, intravenous drug use and visits to STD clinics. People with many sexual partners were found to attend such clinics most often.
