Emigration to new habitats by voles: The cost of dispersal paradox

Article Abstract:

Fitness of individuals that moved to new habitats and those that remained within habitat boundaries in populations of the prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster, and the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus were compared to test the cost of dispersal hypothesis. Observations showed that emigrants generally had greater fitness than residents and that the difference in fitness was habitat dependent, thus supporting the hypothesis.

Optimal migration strategies in animals that run: a range equation and its consequences

Article Abstract:

Optimal migration theory depends on the range equation, that is, a function relating potential distance moved to fuel load. A range equation for animal runners is derived, based on biomechanical principles, and this result is used to point out some predictions that can be tested in animals using terrestrial locomotion.

Coorelation between timing of juvenile moult and onset of migration in the blackcap, Sylvia atricapilla

Article Abstract:

The temporal link between postjuvenile moult and autumn migratory activity were investigated in the blackcap, Sylvia atricapilla. The results indicate that the genetic correlations between moult and migration may constrain the independent adaptive evolution of the timing of moult and of migration.
