Ethanol consumption and resistance are inversely related to neuropeptide Y levels
Article Abstract:
Neuropeptide Y has been implicated in alcohol abuse and alcoholism although the neurochemistry is poorly understood. A new study of mice bred for alcohol preference shows that alcohol consumption and resistance to its effects are inversely related to levels of neuropeptide Y in the brain. Mice overexpressing neuropeptide Y drink less alcohol than normal mice, while mice lacking the neuropeptide drink more alcohol than normal mice. It is suggested that the function of neuropeptide Y may be to protect neural circuits from overstimulation.

Histone H2AX-dependent [GABA.sub.A] receptor regulation of stem cell proliferation
Article Abstract:
The regulation of the stem cell proliferation by the histone H2AX-dependent [GABA.sub.A] receptor is discussed. The mechanism involved in the proliferation control is found to be extremely different from that involved in other somatic cells.

Reduced antinociception and plasma extravasation in mice lacking a neuropeptide Y receptor
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the role of neuropeptide Y in preventing the release of pain neurotransmitters through antinociceptive actions. The physiological role of the neuropeptide Y receptor in the transmission of pain is discussed.
