Expanding Canada's knowledge base: Canada needs scientists from almost all disciplines to fuel its economy. In the past, the country's attractiveness to job-seekers has been overshadowed by that of the United States, but things are changing
Article Abstract:
Science is playing an important part in Canada's change from an economy reliant on commodities and exports, to one based on knowledge and technology. However there is an acute shortage of scientists in many fields and both the government and private industry are addressing the problem. Canadian science ranks third in the world and the overall impact of published scientific papers is high. There is a lack of funding and people to build-up the country's science establishment.

Next-generation biologists must straddle computation and biology
Article Abstract:
Those working in bioinformatics require a range of skills, as the field involves elements including clinical medicine, human genetics and studies of bacteria, fruitflies and yeast. Traditional divisions between disciplines must become more blurred.
