Article Abstract:

The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) in Singapore, which is a not-for-profit initiative by the Swiss company Novartis, is indicative of a growing trend in successful pharmaceutical companies, which invest in providing greater access to medicines for poorer countries. Limited resources can be made available for such charitable enterprises since returns for investors are of prime importance, but for some neglected diseases a small investment can make a large difference.
