Pres. Bill Clinton emphasized the importance of science in propelling the US into the 21st Century during his campaign speeches. Clinton and VP Al Gore outlined their administration's science policy and accused Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole of planning substantial cuts to research funding. Meanwhile, several scientists expressed optimism over Clinton's plan to appoint Mary Good as presidential science adviser during his second term.

Difficulties have been encountered in US efforts to build the space station Freedom, as the Clinton administration attempts to choose between three new and alternative designs. None of these choices is the best solution. The answer lies in true international participation through the creation of a multinational planning mechanism.
