Influence of experimentally elevated testosterone on nest defence in dark-eyed juncos

Article Abstract:

Increased testosterone generally causes male dark-eyed juncos, Junco hyemalis, to reduce care of dependent offspring. A predator model was used to study the link between testosterone and nest defence, to give a more immediate measure of male parental effort. Control males show responses within 10 minutes to a mounted specimen of an eastern chipmunk placed in the nests, compared to testosterone-treated males, although T-males initiated nest defence as quickly as C-males.

What cues do brown-headed cowbirds use to locate red-winged blackbird host nests?

Article Abstract:

The signals that brown-headed cowbirds, Molothrus ater, utilize to track the nests of red-winged blackbirds, Agelaius phoeniceus, were investigated by comparing parasitized and unparasitized nests with respect to perch proximity, height and cover, and host behavior. Results indicate that brown-headed cowbirds use trees and other perches to search for the nests of red-winged blackbirds and vocalization of red-winged blackbirds serves as clues to nest location.
