Ferns diversified in the shadow of angiosperms

Article Abstract:

An experiment conducted to understand the trends in fern diversification revealed that the polypod ferns diversified in the Cretaceous after angiosperms. This meant that an ecological opportunistic response to the diversification of angiosperms, as they came to dominate terrestrial systems, was possible.

Ferns reawakened

Article Abstract:

A review of some of the biological concepts that are outdated yet used in research, is presented. The concept of the evolutionary cul-de-sac that explains the existence of once-diverse groups of organisms, fails to hold good as ferns.

Horsetails and ferns are a monophyletic group and the closest living relatives to seed plants

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the phylogenetic analysis of 35 land plants which are representative of all the major land plant lineages. The ferns and the horsetails were found to be the most closely related to seed plants.
