Finding genes in Plasmodium falciparum

Article Abstract:

The GlimmerM gene-finder has been used to analyze chromosome 3 of the malarial parasite Plasmodium falciparum. This approach led to the identification of 25 possible new genes on chromosome 3 in regions currently annotated as non-coding. GlimmerM's predictions indicate different splice sites for 49 of the 215 genes annotated on chromosome 3. It is possible to challenge this analysis, arguing that overreliance on a single algorithm can produce errors in annotation. An analysis of chromosome 2 using Genefinder/hexamer shows that 40 modifications must be made to the original gene predictions. This demonstrates the inaccuracy of first-pass annotation from uncharacterized genomic DNA.

Transcriptional differences in polymorphic and conserved domains of a complete cloned P. falciparum chromosome

Article Abstract:

The human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum has been difficult to study because of its complex life cycle. However, an ordered telomere-to-telomere contig map was constructed from yeast artificial chromosomes to examine strain-dependent polymorphisms. This approach revealed that specific polymorphic and non-polymorphic regions have different transcription patterns.

A superfamily of variant genes encoded in the subtelomeric region of Plasmodium vivax

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the comparison of the subtelomeric domains of the DNA in the parasites of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax to investigate the difference in pathogenicity between the two organisms.
