Flushing submarine canyons

Article Abstract:

Observation from a submarine canyon on the Gulf of Lions margin, in the northwest Mediterranean Sea demonstrate that sediment gravity flows could also be triggered by dense shelf water cascading (DSWC), a type of current that is driven solely by sea-water density contrast. The results show that DSWC could transport large amounts of water and sediment, reshape submarine canyon floors and rapidly affect the deep-sea environment.

Raptorial jaws in the throat help moray eels swallow large preys

Article Abstract:

The article describes how the moray eel masters reduced suction capacity by launching raptorial pharyngeal jaws out of its throat and into its oral cavity. The eel jaws grasp a struggling prey animal and transport it back to the throat and into the oesophagus.

Replicating genotype-phenotype associations

Article Abstract:

New cost-effective genotyping technologies for assessing the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are presented, which can also be employed for studying the phenomenon of replication of the genotype-phenotype associations.
