Article Abstract:

Budgerigars are studied with a focus on their ability to imitate sounds and the functions of these imitations. The experiments prove that the male budgerigars modify their contact call rates and repertoires in an audience-specific manner.

A new study tests the theory that vocal imitations in budgerigars is linked to pair bonding. The study concludes that contact call imitation in adult birds may contribute to pair bond formation and maintenance.
