Jury still undecided on French reforms
Article Abstract:
Claude Allegre, the French minister of national education, research and technology, promised to reform the research system. However, researchers are concerned that very little has happened since he was appointed in June 1997. Allegre has increased the number of research and technician posts and slightly increased the funding for science which pleased scientists initially but they are now becoming frustrated at the lack of any further progress because they feel that reform is urgently needed. Allegre's manner has upset many in the scientific sector.

France is urged to loosen ban on embryo research
Article Abstract:
The national bioethics committee in France is recommending a partial lifting of the ban on human embryo research to permit the continued use of embryonic stem cells in scientific research. Some sectors believe that the move is an acceptable compromise between supporters and opponents of embryo research. It also affirms the absence of a policy regarding the issue of whether an embryo becomes a person upon conception or at some later date.
