French museum 'in decay' fights for its life
Article Abstract:
A government advisory panel reports that France's National Museum of Natural History has deteriorated considerably due to decades of government neglect. It claims that the museum is not meeting minimum safety requirements. Its herbarium, whose eight million specimens make it the world's largest, has an antiquated electrical system and was almost destroyed by a fire. It is reported to have no operational budget. The French government recently announced its intention to conduct an audit of the museum's requirements as part of a full-scale renovation program.

Anthropology museum fights art gallery plan
Article Abstract:
The world's largest anthropology museum, le Musee de l'Homme in Paris, is the centre of a debate that will decide whether the museum will be renovated or converted into an institution of primitive/early art. Plans for renovation of the museum have been complicated by the government's decision to add collections from the Museum of African and Oceanic Arts. The main criticism against converting the museum into a primitive art centre is the possible severing of links that the museum has developed between archaeology, biological anthropology, and ethnology.

Renovation of Paris museum leaves collection in disarray
Article Abstract:
Controversy is surrounding the efforts to renovate the Grande Galerie of the National History Museum in Paris. The Grande Galerie, which was closed to the public in 1965, is now in the final stages of renovation at a cost of $80 million. However, poor design has resulted in the deterioration of some zoological collections. In addition, many of the museum's senior academicsare criticizing the new Galerie as a 'EuroDisney of evolution'. However, many of the criticisms can be traced to unhappiness over administrative reforms.
