French report seeks to slow fusion project

Article Abstract:

A report published by an advisory committee to the French government calls for ensuring long-term financial guarantee and resolving technological problems before building the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The ITER will be used to study nuclear fusion as an energy source. The report warns that French expenditure on a European space program will negatively effect the funding of other research projects. Scientists not involved with ITER should be given more powers in running the project.
