Function and mechanism of mirror-image ambiguity in bumblebees

Article Abstract:

A study investigating floral recognition by bumblebees focuses on the function and mechanism of mirror-image ambiguity. The study shows that bees, previously trained to distinguish between unrewarding and rewarding artificial flowers, chose the left-right reversal over a mirror image configuration and a novel configuration. The findings fail to support the mirror-image mental transformation hypothesis but suggest that there is a specific mechanism for left-right transposition of a floral pattern.

How do bumblebees first find flowers? Unlearned approach responses and habituation

Article Abstract:

Flower-naive bumblebees, Bombus impatiens, with unrewarding stimuli in a radial arm maze is presented and their approach responses are compared to stimulus are compared. The comparison showed that bees showed a significant preference for yellow and blue over other colors and for radial patterns over concentric patterns or unpatterned discs.
