The imminent choice of a new director for the International Medical Research Centre (CIRMF) in the former French colony of Gabon in Africa will be critical to the future of the centre. The centre could become an international centre of excellence in infectious diseases but it has suffered administrative and social problems. A member of the CIRMF scientific board argues that a strong and fresh outlook is required.

France puts big science under scrutiny

France is to review its commitments to 'big science' which is an area where it feels cash savings can be made. The international Ocean Drilling Programme is one project likely to come under close scrutiny. It also plans to re-evaluate its own national research facilities, as Claude Alegre, minister of national education, research and technology, is said to be very sceptical of their value.
