Article Abstract:
Astronomer Gerard de Vaucouleurs died on Oct 7, 1995 in Austin, Texas. He is well known for his research on galaxies. His notable achievements include work on luminosity distribution and the structure of elliptical galaxies. He convinced other scientists of the existence of a local supercluster of galaxies with the Virgo cluster as its nucleus. The three editions of 'Reference Catalogues of Bright Galaxies' owe much of the data to de Vaucouleurs.
