Getting a jump on listing

Article Abstract:

The moratorium and funding restrictions on listing of endangered and threatened species have been lifted allowing the Fish and Wildlife Service to cope with a backlog of 242 species awaiting category listing decision. The Congress has appropriated only half of the funds requested by the administration for the purpose of clearing the backlog. The listing priority will be in order of danger of extinction, high level threats to species, and lastly reclassification and delistings. The California red-legged frog is the first to be listed as threatened since the lifting of the restrictions.

Listing proposals - June July 1994

Article Abstract:

The Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended the names of one plant and seven animal species to be listed as endangered species. If the recommendation is approved, the Endangered Species Act protection will cover the jaguar, five freshwater mussels species and Steller's Eider and the plant Delissea undulata. Urbanization, poaching and water pollution are the main reasons for the threat to the animal populations.
