Australian reef fisheries project swims for survival

Article Abstract:

The Australian government's decision to allow controlled testing of adaptive management in the Great Barrier Reef is being opposed in the federal parliament. The project intends to evaluate the effects of line fishing and the rates of recovery of different species on the Great Barrier Reef. It involves fishing in prohibited reefs and increased fishing on the reefs which are currently open for fishing. Meg Lees, the environment spokeswoman of the Democrats, has accused Robert Hill, the Minister for the environment, of having bowed to the pressure from the commercial industry.

Cash-strapped ANZAAS is set for closure

Article Abstract:

The Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS), founded in 1888, is likely to close because of lack of funds. The association was created to give Australia's and New Zealand's scientists coherence and identity. ANZAAS congresses have been attracting fewer delegates in the last few years, mainly because of the increased interest in specialist conferences.
