Guido Pontecorvo (1907-99)
Article Abstract:
Geneticist Guido Pontecorvo studied at the University of Pisa, Italy. He worked in the Agricultural Research Institute in Florence, Italy, before emigrating to Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1938. He became a lecturer in zoology at Glasgow University, Scotland, in 1941, and in 1945 became head of the genetics department. He discovered the parasexual cycle in fungi, and also made a significant contribution to research into the structure and organization of genes. He moved to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund's laboratory in London, England, in 1968.

Barbara McClintock (1902-1992)
Article Abstract:
Nobel prize-winning geneticist Barbara McClintock died on Sep 2, 1992 at the age of 90. McClintock was born in 1902 at Hartford, CT, but grew up in Brooklyn, NY. She earned her doctorate at Cornell University in 1927 and carried out research there until she eventually transferred to the Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory in Dec 1941. Her work on the genetics of corn placed her at the forefront of 20th-century geneticists. McClintock was awarded the Nobel prize in 1983 for her identification of mobile genetic elements.

Anne McLaren (1927-2007)
Article Abstract:
Anne McLaren was an inspiring reproductive biologist and mammalian geneticist. She received many awards for her work and she was also the joint recipient of the Japan Prize and of the March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology.
