Habitat-contingent reproductive behaviour in radio-implanted salamanders: a model and test

Article Abstract:

Tiger salamanders, Ambystoma tigrinum, utilizing a small pond as a habitat were monitored during the breeding season using radio-implants to determine the difference between the reproductive behavior of tiger salamanders in their natural habitat and that in the laboratory. Most of the observed behavior was consistent with the predictions based on an extended model that took reproductive strategies and differential use of habitat during the reproductive cycle into account.

To avoid or not to avoid? Factors influencing the discrimination of predator diet cues by a terrestrial salamander

Article Abstract:

The influence of genetic relatedness (degree of genetic similarity between prey) and ecological relatedness (degree of refuge and trophic overlap between synoptic prey) on the evolution of predator-diet discrimination in red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus is tested. Both genetic and ecological relatedness play a role in the evolution of predator-diet discrimination in red-backed salamanders.
