Heavy carbon dioxide

Article Abstract:

Oxygen isotopes in carbon dioxide can provide valuable information about the presence and the exchange pattern of carbondioxide. Oxygen isotopes are sensitive to rates of gross primary production and rates of diffusion through stomata, without changing the carbon isotopes or the total concentration of carbon dioxide. A study reveals that the minuscule amount of water in chloroplasts influences the isotopic signature of oxygen atoms and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Seasonal and interannual variations in atmospheric oxygen and implications for the global carbon cycle

Article Abstract:

Atmospheric oxygen levels fluctuate according to season in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres but show an overall decrease as indicated by measurements by a new interferometric method. These seasonal oxygen fluctuations can be used to estimate how much organic carbon will be emitted by the oceans as a part of the carbon cycle. Furthermore, oxygen levels can also be used to estimate how quickly anthropogenic CO2 is being absorbed by the oceans.

The influence of Antarctic sea ice on glacial-interglacial CO2 variations

Article Abstract:

A box model was used to examine the glacial-interglacial linkages between Antarctic air temperature and atmospheric CO2 variations. It is suggested that low glacial atmospheric CO2 levels could be due to reduced deep-water ventilation linked to all year Antarctic sea-ice coverage, or wintertime coverage together with ice-induced stratification in the summer.
