A guest-free germanium clathrate
Article Abstract:
The high-yield synthesis and characteristics of germanium with the empty clathrate-II structure through the oxidation of [Ge.sub.9][.sup.4-] Zintl anions in ionic liquids under ambient conditions is reported. The reported method demonstrates the potential of ionic liquids as media for the reactions of polar intermetallic phases.

Amorphous silica-like carbon dioxide
Article Abstract:
The synthesis of an amorphous, silica-like form of carbon dioxide, a-C[O.sub.2], called a-carbonia, is reported. The results show that the class of archetypal network forming disordered systems which include a-Si[O.sub.2], a-Ge[O.sub.2] and water must be extended to include a-C[O.sub.2].
