Home on the range

Article Abstract:

Two wild male jaguars were photographed in Arizona during 1996, fueling a movement to have the species listed as endangered within the US and restrict the use of its critical habitat by ranchers and others. After extensive surveys in the areas of the sightings, wildlife researchers concluded that jaguars have not been permanent US residents for centuries. They do frequently wander into the US, however, and deserve listing as an endangered species within their US range. The US Fish and Wildlife Service designated jaguars as endangered on Jul 17, 1997, but placed no use restrictions on their habitat.

Back to basics

Article Abstract:

Wildlife conservationists need to be better trained in practical aspects of management and research methodology if endangered species in foreign nations are going to be saved. Many conservationists do not have the skills to do proper population studies, much less develop programs that nations can adopt to protect their wildlife. The formation of a new training program for field biologists that has been implemented in Asia tries to overcome communications barriers to teach effective management and research techniques.
