Homology of arthropod anterior appendages revealed by Hox gene expression in a sea spider

Article Abstract:

Examinations of the Hox gene expression patterns and immunohistological analysis have resolved the relationships between cerebral appendages of the two main extant arthropod lineages, the Euchelicerata and the Mandibulata. New studies show that the short prehensile chelicerae of euchelicerates, and the antennae of mandibulates, are homologous, both being innervated by deutocerebral ganglia.

The origin of red algae and the evolution of chloroplasts

Article Abstract:

Support for the hypothesis that green plants and red algae are genetically linked also suggests evidence for the origin of these groups in a single primary endosymbiosis. Glaucophages may be the closest relatives of the green plants and red algae.

Unexpected diversity of small eukaryotes in deep-sea Antarctic plankton

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the large number of prokaryotic lineages which were investigated through the extraction of ribosomal RNA genes from picoplankton in the Antarctic. The diversity of eukaryotes is discussed.
