Hot stuff under southern Chile
Article Abstract:
Uranium-series disequilibria isotope data have been obtained for the austral volcanic zone (AVZ) of the southernmost Andes, one of the few places where young (Holocene) adakites are found. This data has been compared with data from the southern volcanic zone (SVZ), situated north of the intersection between the Chile ridge and trench. It was found that SVZ lavas have a marked U excess, while the AVZ lavas all show Th excess. It seems that the deep slab is dehydrated and rich in the dense mineral garnet. This could affect the geodynamics of the plate subducted beyond the arc.

Silurian hydrothermal-vent community from the southern Urals, Russia
Article Abstract:
The Silurian Yaman Kasy sulphide deposit in southern Urals, Russia, presents a fossil assemblage similar to a modern sea-floor back-arc vent community. It contains various species of monoplacophoran molluscs, brachiopods and vestimentiferan tube-worms. The deposit's vestimentiferan and polychaete tube-worms share similar characteristics with those found in past and modern vent communities. However, the monoplacophorans and brachiopods are unique to Yaman Kasy.

Evaluation of age- and sex-dependent rates of tag loss in southern elephant seals
Article Abstract:
A new method of estimating tag loss in southern elephant seals allows estimation of the impact of age, or other covariates, on tag loss. The exact time at liberty is used for each resight, with all resights thus being included in the estimate.
