Signalling of hunger when offspring forage by both begging and self-feeding

Article Abstract:

The offspring begging that conveys information on offspring hunger is shown by studies on vertebrate species in which the offspring obtain food only from their parents. It is concluded that, in partially begging species, food obtained through both foraging strategies that is begging for food from parents and self-feeding, contribute to the offspring's current hunger state, and that begging can convey information about it.

How do caring parents respond to mate loss? Differential response by males and females

Article Abstract:

A test for facultative adjustments in care in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides, where both parents regurgitate predigested carrion to their offspring is tested. Results reveal that females were considerably more involved than males in direct care of the larvae before mate removal.
