IUCN's credibility critically endangered
Article Abstract:
The views of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Species Survival Commission (SSC), its main subdivision, are taken very seriously by politicians, journalists and scientists across the world. However, some observers believe that there are considerable problems with IUCN and SSC procedures. Some IUCN analyses seem to contain information that is either incorrect or misleading, and further difficulties are created by efforts to protect some sources of IUCN data. It is a cause for concern that the IUCN is disseminating statements obtained from information that is not publicly available.

New towns grow up
Article Abstract:
It is now 50 years since the UK government approved the New Towns Act, setting in motion an initiative which was to create 28 New Towns where 2 million people now live. The building of New Towns allowed many people to move away from run-down inner-city areas and to take advantage of affordable housing and the availability of employment. The development of the market economy and privatisation means that this is no longer possible.
