Illegal trade in Tibet
Article Abstract:
Endangered Shahtoosh antelopes, prized for their fine, soft fur, are being hunted to extinction in Tibet. The antelopes live 15,000 feet in the Tibetan mountains and are categorized as a Class 1 protected species in China, the same as the giant panda. Thousands of the antelopes are being killed each year; a shawl made from their wool may sell for as much as $8,500 in Europe. Tibet has set aside the Chang Tang Reserve to try to preserve some of its endangered species, but it does not have the resources to police its mountains.

Mongolia's golden horde: a million migrating gazelles
Article Abstract:
Poaching remains the primary threat to gazelle conservation in Mongolia. Illegal kills are estimated at more than 100,000 per year, and the $30 to $40 fines are rarely enforced. Other threats to the species include development, oil extraction and a railroad, as further encroachment interferes with the gazelles' migratory patterns and paths. Further research is needed to determine future conservation goals and improve monitoring procedures.

Tibet's hidden wilderness
Article Abstract:
Highlights from George B. Schaller's book, Tibet's Hidden Wilderness, have been presented. Schaller was the first Westerner to visit Tibet's Chang Tang and document life in this remote area. Images of nomadic life, a desolate landscape, early civilization, and exotic wildlife have been included. Trucks have replaced much of the nomadic traveling and trading expeditions previously done by yak or horse.
