Imperfect fluids and inheritance

Article Abstract:

Evans, Fairhurst and Poon have developed equations describing how the disorder in complex fluids partitions among the phases. Their mathematical description derives the equation linking various statistical moments of the parent distribution function. The problem is illustrated using ethylene-propylene rubber (EPR), and in this context, certain connections between composition distribution of parent and daughter phases may have useful applications.

Spin domains in ground-state Bose-Einstein condensates

Article Abstract:

Bose-Einstein condensates are associated with weakly interacting hydrogen atoms and dilute gases of alkali-metal and are normally confined by magnetic traps. However, these may cause untrapped states because of spin flips in the atom. A new study uses an optical trap which confines atoms independently of their spin orientations (spinor) to investigate the equilibrium states of sodium spinor condensates. The new technique is described.

Mixing fluids and solids

Article Abstract:

The mathematical approach of the finite element technique is effective for calculations incorporating both fluids and solids at the same time. The partial differential equations use continuously updated neighboring coordinates. This numerical modeling method may be applied to geodynamics as well as problems in hydroelasticity, hot forging, solidification processes and cardiomechanics.
