In pursuit of usefulness and distraction

Article Abstract:

'Nature' has been redesigned to enhance accessibility and clarity of its articles. Aside from typefaces that assumed different size, shape and spacing, new uses of color and changes in style of presentation were also made. Some enhancements in content were likewise embraced, such as the incorporation of titles of papers in the reference lists of Letters, Articles, and Review and Progress Articles, as well as the introduction of the Methods section. A new News and Views Feature section has also been introduced while the Book Reviews section was improved through book discussions 'in retrospect.'

A broken embargo

Article Abstract:

USA Today journalist Tim Friend broke the traditional embargo on releasing information taken from article proofs that Nature distributes to allow journalists time to digest the information. R. Sherrington's discovery of genetic mutations linked to early onset of Alzheimer's was mentioned in a congressional hearing. Its subsequent mention in the press led Friend to publish details from the Nature proofs before Nature could publish the whole paper. Therefore, Nature has removed USA Today from its distribution list.

Transcription and the broken heart

Article Abstract:

de la Pompa and colleagues and Ranger and colleagues have provided hints as to how a single transcriptional regulator can linked the genetic and environmental causes of birth defects involving valve and septum formation. A mouse gene encoding NF-AT transcription factors was specifically mutated, and it was found that the pulmonary and aortic valves failed to form.
