Influence of mesoscale eddies on new production in the Sargasso Sea

Article Abstract:

The idea that mesocale processes may be an important vehicle for nutrient transport has long been debated. A regional eddy-resolving model was used to build long-term aseasonal simulations characteristic of the mesocale environment in the Sargasso Sea. The results show that simulations are statistically realistic representations of mesoscale fluctuations. Results of the incorporation of a simple biological model into the calculations show that upwelling due to cyclonic eddy formation leads to sporadic nutrient injections into the surface layer.
