Information content of female chemical signals in the wolf spider, Schizocosa ocreata: Male discrimination of reproductive state and receptivity

Article Abstract:

Behavioural assays were used to determine whether wolf spider Schizocosa ocreata (Hentz) can discriminate potentially receptive mates using cues associated with female silk. Males showed significantly more and longer bouts of chemosensory and courtship behaviours with significantly reduced latency on the silk of adult, unmated female spiders than on any other stimulus treatment including the silk of subadult and mated females.

Male copulation behavior and the risk of sperm competition

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted, in the golden orb-web spider edulis, to investigate how the risk of sperm competition may influence male mating behavior. The result shows that edulis adjust the frequency and duration of copulation according to the mating history of the female and the presence of rival males.
