Ionospheric signatures of pulsed reconnection at the Earth's magnetopause

Article Abstract:

The pulsating-cusp model of the magnetopause is supported by new observations. The magnetopause is the region where the solar wind forms a boundary with earth's magnetosphere, and competing models show it as either continuous or varying such as in a pulsating cusp. Observations using satellite and ground based radar show that auroras in the polar region result from plasmas from the solar wind, fitting the pulsating-cusp model.

Continuous magnetic reconnection at Earth magnetopause

Article Abstract:

The solar-wind plasma is the most important process to cross the magnetopause and enter Earth's magnetosphere. The reconnection at Earth's high-latitude magnetopause that is driven directly by the solar wind is demonstrated, which can be continuous and even quasi-steady over an extended period of time.

In situ detection of collisionless reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail

Article Abstract:

An encounter of the Wind spacecraft with an active reconnection region in which were found key processes predicted by models of collisionless reconnection is reported. It was possible to show that collisionless reconnection arises in the magnetotail.
