Jake Vander Zanden: Rock, water, papers
Article Abstract:
Jake Vander Zanden, one of the Smith fellows, has documented the effects on native lake trout in Ontario when smallmouth bass was introduced. The bass, a voracious Great Lakes-area fish that anglers have carried far beyond its original range, hogs the minnows that the trout also feed on and it was seen that the food web changed dramatically when bass got into the lake.

The nature conservancy looks beyond hot spots
Article Abstract:
The importance of conserving the entire ecosystems, habitats and needs of people versus merely conserving biodiversity hotspots is emphasized. Conservation of mangroves, sea-grass beds and marshes, which are low in plant species, but high in value is suggested.
